Hemp concrete is an efficient, non-toxic and mold-resistant material used as thermal insulation to make floors, ceilings and walls.
It is very common for hempcrete to be combined with other materials in a technique called “sandwich wall”. The system is very simple: Two fixed pillars are chosen (wooden, masonry or other type of structure). Then, these two points are connected by two wooden plywoods, one on each side, leaving a gap between them. This cell or empty space is then filled with the mixture. Soon the plywood is removed exposing the finished wall!
As a breathable natural material, hempcrete is also often used to make floors or roof insulation. Engineers and architects can use hemp-derived material to form the entire thermal lining of a construction site.
Although hempcrete is more common to be incorporated into projects coming out of paper, it is also an ideal material for improving the thermal performance of older buildings or even restoring historic buildings. In particular, it works very well when repairing damaged walls or when you want to add insulation in solid masonry, helping to control humidity.
